Actions against atypical pneumonia

Since mid-March:

Through phone calls and face-to-face meetings, closely monitor the impacts atypical pneumonia (AP) has on the industry and convey industry grievances to senior government officials.

Mon, 24 March:

Send open letter to urge Hong Kong Catering Industry Association (CIA) members to take precautions including providing customers with extra chopsticks and employees with masks and cleaning more frequently.
Issue press release to inform the public industry precautions are in place already.

Tue, 25 March:

Engage CIA members to meet urgently and they agree:
1.    employees, who often have contact with food, should wear masks;
2.    waiters and waitresses have to wear masks if food they pass on customers is not covered with a lid;
3.    customers are provided with extra chopsticks;
4.    employees have to be more hygienic and
5.    to request or allow employees who have AP symptoms, to take leave and seek medical treatment immediately

Tue, 25 March - Wed, 2 April:

With Liberal Party assistance, help some local restaurants to source as many as 18,000 masks within a short period of time.

Mon, 1 April:

Write to Chief Executive to reflect the industry is in extreme difficulty and demand the government should provide instant loan or loan guarantee to SMEs.

Thu, 3 April:

In the debate to resume Second Reading of the 03-04 Budget, request the government to:
1.    Waive rates payment from April to June and the waiving should continue if the economic situation, unfortunately, worsens;
2.    Act as a role model to offer rent concessions to commercial tenants of government properties;
3.    Reduce or waive water charges, sewage charges and trade effluent surcharges from April to June;
4.    Provide immediate financial assistance including loans to SMEs
5.    Temporarily suspend MPF contributions for two years.

Fri, 4 April:

Write to Director of Lands to request rent concessions from April to June to commercial tenants of properties managed under the Lands Department
Write to urge Hong Kong Town Gas and the two electric companies to help enterprises storm the crisis through slashing energy fees
Liberal Party announced members of the Real Estate Developers Association of Hong Kong may offer 10-40% rent reductions for three months subject to the operating conditions of individual tenant

Tue, 8 April:

Arrange a meeting for CIA members to talk to Permanent Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands (Housing). Catering industry tenants requested 70-100% rent reductions of government properties.
